Edo govt plans reconstruction of 115-year-old hospital

The Edo State Government has hinted on plans to begin reconstruction work at the Central hospital in Benin City, Edo State Capital, following the advertisement of bidding for the contract.

The hospital complex which was built in 1906, is under a separate Management from Edo Specialist hospital, Benin that was reconstructed by the former Governor of the State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, but was privatised by the Government.

Dr. Osamwonyi Irowa, Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Health, said the government hinted that is already working on alternative arrangement to reorganize staff of the hospital temporarily for effective service delivery.

Irowa who dropped the hint when he featured on Raypower pidgin English programme, “as e dey hot”, Tuesday morning, monitored in Benin, was silent on Government plans on the challenge of manpower and equipment that are inherent in the hospital.

“We are rebuilding the Central hospital. We are bringing the whole thing down within the next few weeks. That is why you can’t find people there at the moment”, he said.

According to him, the project have been advertised and some of the structures in the hospital would be pulled down to pave the way for the reconstruction exercise.

Our Correspondent reports that if proposal sails through, it would also give the needed impetus to Edo State Health Insurance Scheme (EdoHIS) where over 9,604 elderly, physically challenged persons including pregnant women and other vulnerable persons have registered.
