The Governor of Cross River State, Benin Ayade has defected from Peoples Democratic party to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2023 general elections.
The Cross River State Governor has been having a running battle with the leadership of the PDP in the State after his cronies lost out in the Congresses that produced the current PDP State Executive Council (SEC).
Christian Ita, media aide to the Governor who confirmed the defection of the Governor, said: “It is true. We are there now. He has just declared for the APC”.
Ayade who became a two-term governor and also a Senator of the federal Republic of Nigeria, defected on Thursday morning at the Government House in Calabar, the State Capital, barely 24 hours after he had diner with President Muhammadu Buhari frontrunners in APC.
Sources said Ayade’s defection was fine tuned at the dinner with some of the APC Governors at the dinner.
Some of the Governors include Mr. Hope Uzodimma of Imo, Dave Umahi, Ebonyi; Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Kebbi; Mai Mala Buni, Yobe and Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa.
A Chieftain of PDP said the party will make its position regarding Ayade’s defection known soon.
