Ebonyi Stakeholders, PDP clash over alleged abduction of kinsman

.

Some Stakeholders in Ebonyi State and the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) have clashed over reported abduction of a prominent lawyer from the State, Ogbonnaya Amos.

Ogbonnaya, former Coordinator of Anuagata Development Centre in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the State, was reportedly kidnapped in Okposi area of the State by gunmen on and brutalized by hoodlums on Thursday May 13, 2021, causing outrage.

In a swift response, the State governor Mr. David Umahi, ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident in a bid to bring the alleged culprits to justice.

Reacting to the incident, the main opposition party (PDP) in the State, says it welcome the call for investigation, accused the State Government of attempting to scuttle investigation into the incident, alleging conflicting interests shown by the Government.

The Publicity Secretary of tje State Chapter of PDP, Mr. Silas Joseph Onu made the allegation in a Press release he issued on Sunday in the State.

Onu also called on police authorities to interrogate the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Uchenna Orji “for accessory after the fact by attempting to convolute facts and confuse the issues on ground, deliberately”.

“So, now that the Governor has openly acknowledged the abduction, which he amusingly referred to as alleged, what has his Commissioner for Information got to say about his misguided panicky press statement?.

“It is pertinent to state unequivocally that the Governor has no right to be involved in this investigation as he is the principal suspect.

“He (David Umahi) incited the attack on Amos and those who carried out the criminal act are in his employ. Amos Ogbonnaya also relayed how Mr. Roy Umahi sent him a threat SMS that he is doomed for filing a complaint against the Governor at EFCC (the message is still there)”, he said.

But the President of the pressure group, Okposi e-8, umbrella Organization of leaders of thought from Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area in the State, Elder E.J Okorie and its General Secretary, Mr. Kenechukwu Agwu in a statement on Sunday May 16, 2021, lamented the spate of insecurity in their locality and demanded for an abduction of their kinsmen.

The group also called for a detailed investigation into the incident, arrest and prosecution of the suspected culprits.

“Once beaten, they say, twice shy. We do not want the sad incident of the past to repeat itself. Okposi Ezinasato will, therefore, not sit back and watch anybody, whether from our community, state, or anywhere, waste the life of any of our children in such a manner again.

“As a leading organization of Okposi Ezinasato leaders of thought, we condemn in the strongest possible terms the inhuman treatment meted to Chief Amos and the systematic attempts at eliminating our prominent ones under whatever guise.

“We can no longer fold our hands and watch while our beloved community is being gradually thrown into a state of anarchy by forces either within or outside our environment.

“We, therefore, call on the government, the security agencies, and our traditional rulers to immediately investigate and bring to book all persons involved either directly or indirectly in this barbaric act. As members of Okposi e-8, we shall not leave any stone unturned to ensure that peace, not anarchy, reigns supreme in our Community”, the statement said.
