Federal Neuro-Psychiatric hospital (FNPH), Benin says Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) is yet to document mental balance test request for traffic violators in the State.
A Benin based journalist-turned lawyer, Mr. Jefferson Uwaghiren had published on his Facebook page that the Managing Director of EDSMA and the Management of Federal Neuro-Psychaitric Hospital, Benin, had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to recommend some road traffic offenders to the health facility.
Responding to inquiry by our Correspondent on Tuesday, the Managing Director of EDSTMA, Mr. Dennis Oloriegbe who was represented by Mr Osagie Emokpae and the Medical Director of the Federal Neuro-Psychaitric Hospital, Benin, Dr. Imafidon Agbonile, acknowledged the visit by the Management of EDSTMA, but insisted that Agency is yet to formalise the verbal request.
He declined comment on the number of suspected road traffic offenders that have been presented by EDSTMA to the Hospital for mental health balance test.
Agbonile stated however that checking for measure health balance is not punitive as widely speculated.
“It is not peculiar to EDSTMA alone. Other organizations had approached us to carryout a metal stability test on certain individuals before.
They approached us to assist in testing some of their drivers who they suspect to acted under the influence of alcohol or a drug user.
“But we asked them to do a proper documentation.
“This is a big organization and a lot of people do come almost on a daily basis.
“It is not a punitive measure as widely speculated”, he said.
