Two national leaders of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) from Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial districts, Chief Tom Ikimi and Chief Raymond Dokpesi have welcome calls by some Stakeholders in the party to dissolve the state Executive Committee of the ruling party.
Some leaders of the party in the State on Tuesday had petitioned Governor Obaseki and deputy, Mr. Philip Shaibu to the national Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, accusing the Governor of plotting to dissolve the party structure at the Ward, Local Government and State levels.
Worried by the unfolding events, Governor Godwin Obaseki held a closed-door meeting with frontline leaders of the party on Wednesday morning in the Government House, Benin City to starve off the tension in the party.
But Ikimi and Dokpesi in an open letters that were sighted by our Correspondent, admitted that they attended the meeting at the Government House with the Governor and others leaders of the party on invitation without a pre-knowledge of the agenda of the meeting.
They also assured that the move would pave the way for integration, harmonisation and dissolution of all party structures in the State.
Ikimi, Nigeria former Foreign Affairs minister, said: “it makes good sense to execute the Biometric Registration of all members both new and old so that everyone becomes an unadulterated PDP member”.
He said: “The Party structure should then be dissolved and made open for reconstruction. The harmonization of members of the two parties would then become a hitch-free seamless process.
“Those who hold office now can still re-contest or be accommodated in other ways. This view I have freely expressed several times on different occasions and I am very convinced it is the best way forward”, he said.
He also stated that the recent announcement by aggrieved members of PDP in the State portrays unwarranted mischief that must be addressed.
Similarly, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, advocated for compensation to those who have much value to the party, adding that loyalty is not sufficient criterion to determine persons who are eligible for leadership positions in PDP.
He expressed concern that six months into the Obaseki administration, the leaders focus is on having positions instead of holding the Governor accountable about delivery of democratic dividend to the people.
According to him, the PDP across board therefore must be integrated into one family without the appellation of joiners and original members especially when “joiners” were original members of the PDP who defected at one stage or the other due to perceived injustices meted out to them.
“The PDP from polling unit level to State level require restructuring and reorganisation”, he said.
