A fugitive who was seen flogging his aged mother in a video has been arrested in Ogidi Community, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The middle-aged man, Sunday Maduegbunam was apprehended by the youths hours after he committed the abominable act also known as ‘alu’, in Igbo dialect.
At some point in the video, Maduegbunam dropped the stick and resorted to slapping, boxing, kicking and stamping on the fallen woman who wept uncontrollably.
He also attempted to strangle his mother to the surprise of onlookers, including women and children.
Irked by the abominable act, elders of the Community who ordered a manhunt for Maduegbunam, directed one of the youths in Idemili to flog him publicly to serve as a deterrent to others.
He was tied hands and legs in an embrace with a pine tree by the youth and was given 100 strokes of whips on his bareback as a punishment for the despicable act.
The young man could be heard in a video, crying and pleading for forgiveness before he was thereafter handed over to police in the area.
This was however after Maduegbunam had confessed to the crime obtained, the youth applied the Ndigbo traditional discipline.
The incidents have triggered a flurry of reactions among Nigerians on social Media.
While many Nigerians applauded the decision of elders of the Community, a few others, blamed the abominable act on breakdown of moral values among the youths.
