Bauchi govt plans mass weddings for ‘repentant sex workers’


The Bauchi State Government has disclosed plans to sponsor the marriages of repentant ‘sex workers in the State; Just as it plans to elocate commercial sex workers in a bid to rid cleanse the State of all forms of filthiness during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan which is one of the seven pillars of Islam is the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar, is deemed auspicious and the holiest. During this month, which consists of 29 to 30 days, Muslims worldwide observe Roza (a fast from sunrise to sunset).

The Permanent Commissioner II in charge of Hisbah, in the Shariah Commission, Barr Aminu Balarabe Isah said this at a pre-Ramadan Sensitisation workshop held at the Bayan Gari area, a suburb of the state metropolis largely harbouring the commercial sex workers in line with the full implementation of the Sharia laws.

Multiple reports quoted the Permanent Secretary as saying that the move would enable the sex workers to get a more decent source of livelihood after their data would be taken through a headcount by the Commission in order to know how many of them are operating in the State.

“We are not here to arrest any of you, rather, to help and repatriate you to your various Local Government Areas and states of origin so that you can engage yourselves in a meaningful and decent life”, he said.

He emphasized that the Bauchi State Hisbah will sponsor the marriages of some of sex workers who are indigenes of Bauchi State who get suitable spouses and provide household items for others to enable them live a decent life as well as became self-reliance.

Responding, Hafsatu Azare, commended Hisbah who spoke on behalf of the sex workers, commended organisers of the workshop, lamented that most of them do not really derive pleasure in sex trade, but, economic hardship lured them into it.
