The governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for ensuring an impartial judiciary to uphold the wishes of the people of the Edo 2020 Governorship Election Petition challenging our victory in the September 19, 2020 polls.

Delivering judgment on the petitions on Monday in Benin, Justice Yunusa Musa-led three-man tribunal, unanimously dismissed all the petitions filed by the aggrieved parties for lacking in merit.

The court held that the petitioners could not substantiate their respective claims and awarded the sum of N200, 000 each to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Philip Shaibu against one of the petitioners, Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

According to the tribunal, “The petitioners have a duty to prove their allegations beyond reasonable doubts. There is no evidence of testimony that established the certificate is forged. The witnesses called never visited the school to confirm the genuineness of the Certificate”.

The petitioners are Action Democratic Party (ADP), Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM), had challenged the declaration of Godwin Obaseki as winner of the election while the Candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)‎, Agol Tracy, failed to join her party in her petition.

At the preliminary stages of the hearing, the petitioners predicated their cases on the basis of result submitted with nomination and expression of interest forms to INEC by the governor for the purpose of the election, and claims of unlawful exclusion from the poll.

Governor Godwin Obaseki, his deputy, Philip Shaibu, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Osagie Ize-Iyamu, APC Governorship Candidate were the respondents in the various petitions.

In a statement, the Governor noted that the ruling is yet another testament that the judiciary upholds fairness and justice.

“I would also like to thank His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for ensuring an impartial judiciary to uphold the wishes of the people”.

According to him, “We are happy with the verdict of the Edo 2020 Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which dismissed all four petitions challenging our victory in the September 19, 2020 polls.

“With the judgement of the Tribunal today, we are once again reassured of the impartiality of the judiciary, as they continue to uphold the ethos of equity and the rule of law. We thank the judiciary for standing for truth”.

He continued: The petitions against our victory at the election were clearly motivated by greed, malice and a quest to undo a fair and just process, deploying despicable means aimed at thwarting the wishes of Edo people.

“This victory is a victory for Edo People who have always believed in us.

“We thank the good people of Edo State for believing in us always. We also appreciate our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, for the unwavering commitment to the development of Edo State.
