Police brutalise NUJ ex-staff over ‘nose mask’ in Edo


A former clerical staff of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, Mr. Osagie Wealth Efe, has been assaulted by a police personnel.


He was reportedly assaulted by a policeman attached to the Taskforce on Covid-19 Committee at Urhokpota ground, King square in Benin City who strip-off the clothes of a pedestrian for breaking Covid-19 protocol.

In a petition addressed to the the Chairman, Covid-19 Human Rights Watch Committee, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Benin branch, demanded a thorough investigation into the incident which occurred on February 17, 2021.

While calling on the State Commissioner of police to take urgent steps to bring the culprit (now at large) to book, the petitioner alleged that the injury he sustained in his eye from the assault has left him with scars and severe discomfort.

In the petition titled: “Petition over act of brutality committed against me by a police operative deployed to Urhokpota Hall, and made available journalists, Osagie, alleged that the culprit escaped before before he could reach his friend.

He further alleged that the unit leader of “the Police officers working with both Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) and personnel of Edo State Taskforce positioned at Urhokpota hall, ordered that the accused personnel should be produced and sponsored his first aid treatment for his left eye.
