Akpabio blasts govs over attack on Buhari, flays ‘petition writers’

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, has challenged Governors from the region to show the projects they spent the 13 per cent oil derivation allocation to their various States over the years.

He berated some Nigeria Governors for publicly criticising Presidency “in a very demeaning terms” for the security challenges in Nigeria and urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore such provocative attacks attacks against him especially on social Media space.

Akpabio said this on Thursday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State at the inauguration of the Corporate Headquarters of Niger Development Commission (NDDC) complex 25 years which started 25 years ago.

According to him, “your Majesties (traditional rulers), your region must cooperate with this administration to move this Country forward. There is no need for people to have the paraphernalia of security – The police, you have, you have the State Security Service (SSS); You have all. Those are the ones that help you to sleep as Governors, yet you will come out and say that ‘Presidency is deceiving the people’.

“Some of the Governors have not ask themselves, what have we done with the 13 per cent oil derivation? Yet, they will open their mouth and talk about Presidency in a very demeaning terms. I want my president to ignore all those things”, he advised.

He also raised concern about petition writing by some individuals and groups against the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) which he claim is destructive and could derail the Government vision for the Niger Delta region.

The former Governor of Akwa Ibom State further threatened to mobilise support for a resist asset sharing formula between Cross River and Akwa Ibom States by the Federal Government by the then regime by Nigeria former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (Rted).

According to Akpabio, “…It is not about outsiders, we are the ones killing ourselves. Niger Delta people why can’t we realise that petition writing is destructive…Those are the things that are bringing us down in this region. It is not outsiders that came to destroy this place.

“Trillions of Naira had been spent on Niger Delta, yet, we have nothing to show for it”, he said.

Continuing, the Minister recalled that “When I became a Governor in Akwa Ibom, I saw something terrible. The asset sharing between Akwa Ibom State and Cross River State was totally inadequate because they left the infrastructure in Cross River State and brought petition writers to Akwa Ibom State.
We must resist that asset sharing so that we can return some of the petition writers in order to balance the situation “.

On his part, President Buhari commended the Minister, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, for steadfastness in ending many years of renting by the Commission, and the attendant profligacy that characterised the project, estimated at N15 billion.

The President, who virtually inaugurated the building from the Council Chamber of the State House, said the land was acquired by the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) in 1996, and was abandoned after series of design amendment.
