Edo: Police claim ignorance as five die in communal clash

The Edo State Police Command declared that he is not aware of the reported bloody clash in Ogheghe Community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the State which claimed five lives on Tuesday morning.

The protracted communal clash pitted two brothers — Saturday Iyirhiaro Akhatise and Festus Iyirhiarho (claimants of the throne) against each other.

During the standoff, residents of Ogheghe, shop owners and pedestrians reportedly scampered for safety, while motorists were forced to take alternative routes.

According to reports from the area, two males were said to have been burnt inside a car in a suspected reprisal attack.

The State Commissioner of police, Mr. Phillip Ogbadu, who confirmed the incident to journalists, however said there was no death.

“As we speak now, they are attacking the palace of Enogie of Ogheghe…And the youths are raising up arms. We are ready for peace, but this youths now are not prepared to wait.

“So, we have failed as parents to bring up our Children after us.

“If you can raise something against a traditional ruler, that something will follow you.

“I am not aware that five people have been killed. The people that were killed happened two to three weeks ago between Okada riders And the Government has advised that Okada has been banned at night.

“What is happening to the Enogie palace is left for the palace to decide. Whatever is the problem, I do not want to talk on it. My own is that I am sent here to ensure that the place is peaceful.

“I know that it is the throne of the Oba of Benin that appoints Enogie. And when the palace has said something, you have no right to reply. Do you have right of reply?

“So, what are we discussing about. So, let us leave that matter”, he said.

Investigation revealed that gunshots rented the air in Ogheghe for several minutes while the clash lasted at the Enogie’s (Duke) palace.

Trouble started when a youth leader loyal to one of the factions, was allegedly murdered by the other faction on Monday.

A resident in the area, Mr. Osabohien, who identified the victim of Monday’s attack as Sunday Isaiah said: “those who killed him later claimed he was an armed robber.”

“And whereas, Sunday and the rival youths had disagreement over whose faction will collect development fee from land developers in the Community.

“I believe his killers were emboldened because they were conscripted into the community vigilance group and they felt it’s time to go after their enemies”, he said.
