Benin monarch reopens oldest West African church for worship

The Benin monarch His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II has ordered the reopening of the Holy Aruosa Cathedral for spiritual worship.

The Secretary to Benin Traditional Council (BTC), Mr Frank Irabor disclosed this in a terse statement on Tuesday.

The Cathedral — the Benin National church in Akpakpava street, Benin City, Edo State, was closed to spiritual activities over change of leadership would be reopen on Sunday February 7th 2021.

The Cathedral, is oldest in West Africa, and was founded in 1849 by Oba Esigie of blessed memory, followed the appointment of a new presiding Priest (Ohen-Osa) Igbinoghodua Edebiri by the monarch who is the head of the church.

This followed the recommendation of the elders Council of the Church which which was closed to spiritual activities over change of leadership would be reopen on Sunday February 7th 2021.

Irabor in the statement on Tuesday, enjoined all worshipers to take note of the new date.

Our Correspondent reports that worshippers in the church, believe Jesus Christ is the true son of God, and do not pray in his name, but they pray directly to God called Osanobuwa in Edo Language.

Besides, sermons and worship are conducted in the church in Edo Language.
