Senate confirms former Service Chiefs as non-career ambassadors

The Nigeria Senate on has confirmed the appointment of the nation’s immediate former Service Chiefs as non-career ambassadors designate.

The retired military Chiefs, Abayomi Olonisakin (retd) (Ekiti); Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd) (Borno); Vice Admiral Ibok- Ette Ibas (retd) (Cross River); Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd) (Bauchi); and Air Vice Marshal Muhammad S. Usman (Rtd) (Kano) were confirmed non-career ambassadors during plenary on Tuesday.

This followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa (APC, Bauchi).

But the Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, had attempted to draw the attention of his colleagues to a petition against their confirmation but was stopped by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari on February 4, 20121, requested the Senate to confirm the former Service Chiefs as non-career ambassadors.
