Obaseki: Some teachers align with godfathers to ruin education in Edo

Edo State has accused some Public Primary Teachers under the aegis of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) of aligning with the godfathers to ruin the career of their colleagues and Edo child education in pursuit of their own selfish ambition.

But, the State NUT Chairman, Pius Okhueleigbe, Assistant Secretary General, Moni Mike Modesty Itua and three others, on Sunday in a statement, urged parents and Guardians to keep their Children at home, pending when the issues of wage dispute between the State Government and the teachers are resolved.

The group in the statement also vowed not to succumb to blackmail, intimidation, but, meaningful dialogue to resolve the industrial action that began on January 18, 2021.

The Governor of the State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki disclosed this in a Broadcast in the early hours of Monday in Benin City where he repeated his No work, No pay threat to striking teachers who had presented a 10-point demands to the Government.

“My dear teachers you can see that the action of a few elements within the NUT, Edo Chapter who called you to go on strike, has very little to do with your welfare. Rather, they have aligned with the godfathers and are now playing with your career as well as the future of our Children in pursuit of their selfish end.

“Some of this NUT leaders certainly have their corrupt, selfish and parochial interest in their pursuing. It is unfortunate that they will mortgage their ethics and integrity for political leverage

“I assure you (teachers) that with your teeming support, and by the grave of God, we will defeat them again in Classroom.

“I thank the number of teachers who have called and sent text messages disassociating themselves from the so-called strike; I assure you that there would be adequate security across the Schools.

“For those who nay have unfortunately may decide to stay from school, please note that the Government will implement No work, No pay policy. Anyone who refuses to show up for work, will not be paid for the period that he did not work”, he warned.

The Governor further said that: “Our desire is to include teachers in the contributory Pension Scheme which Civil servants are enjoying in Edo State. But some of our teachers are frustrating our efforts through disinformation to you.

“With your support despite the impediments of some union leaders, we have been able to completely overhaul the Basic Education sector in our dear State.

“We have retrained more than 11,000 teachers and have restored your dignity as teachers. This is a sharp contrast to the humiliation by the previous administration which requested competency test from you”, he said.
