The Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has concluded plans to generate the sum of N10.5 million from final year students identification (ID) cards for the replacement of expired (I.D) cards upon resumption of 2019/2020 academic activities on February 1, 2021, TheNewspad.com understands.
Investigation revealed that over 7000 final year students drawn from both Part time and regular students from the various Colleges, Departments and Faculties of the institution are expected to pay the sum of N1500 each for the I.D cards excluding other related charges if the proposal sails through.
The news which swept through the sewage of social media on Monday, has become a subject of intense debate among students of the institution, leaving Facebook buzzing and tweeter chipping.
Public Universities lecturers under the aegis of Academic Staff union of Universities (ASUU) recently suspended their nine months old strike which grounded academic activities over poor working conditions and other issues of concern by members of the union.
Contacted for comment, the Public Relations officer of the University, Dr. (Mrs.) Benedicta Ehanire, is yet to respond to the issues that were brought to her attention in connection to the incident via a WhatsApp message which was delivered nine hours ago.
A staff of the institution who confirmed the development, blamed the expiration of students I.D cards on prolonged strike embarked upon by ASUU.
He said: “from the look of things, the students are going to pay for new I.D cards unless the University decide to wave the charges which is very very unlikely.
“According to the University rule, all school I.D cards carry expiry dates and academic calendar. It is usually for a specific period of entry to graduation.
“But the I. D cards can become invalid if a student is unable to graduate within the specific period. And when that happens, the student by reason on default, would have to pay for replacement of I. D card, especially when he or she is unable to graduate within the time frame.
“The students will be formally informed of management decision when they resume”, the source said.
