Edo to launch new security outfit—’operation know your neighbour’

The Edo State government is set to launch a new security outfit in the State, codename, ‘operation know your neighbour’, revving his public perception index in the face of daunting security challenges in the State.

Governor Godwin obaseki disclosed this in his new year message to Edo State delivered on January 1, 2021.

As the name implies, residents of the State will be requesting you to provide information and identities of their neighbours.

According to the Governor: “We are launching operation ‘Know Your Neighbour,’ where we will be requesting you to provide information and identities of all those who live close to you”.

He blamed the social and economic tension emanating from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic which led to the #EndSARS protests and its aftermath, resulted in jailbreaks of the Nigerian Correctional Centres in Oko and Sapele road in Benin City.

Almost 2000 prisoners escaped from the prisons’ facilities, according to him, compounded the security situation in the State, which his government his administration is now dealing with.

“In the midst of the gloom and despair, there was a silver lining for us in Edo State with the conduct of the September 19, 2020 Governorship election, which against all predictions, turned out to be peaceful, credible and a watershed moment for our democracy as a nation.

“With the election, the people of Edo State demonstrated that power truly belongs to the people and that only the people have the right and authority to choose who should govern them. By this action, you inspired us and gave us hope to forge ahead and continue to chart our cause as a people desirous of change, progress and shared prosperity”, the Governor said.

It is uncertain if the will co-exist with the highly criticised the December 2018 Wabaizigan — flush-out hoodlums which gulped over N2 billion Edo people’s tax-payers money or the new security outfit will operate as a separate entity.

But, Edo State APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Mr. David Imuse on Thursday, challenged Governor Godwin Obaseki justify his N700 monthly security vote by addressing security the spate of insecurity in the State.

Recall that the State Governor, had discontinued Edo State neighborhood Watch scheme, set up by his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, amidst speculation that the initiative had been hijacked by maverick politicians.
