Cop detained over missing pistol as robbers raid market in Benin


The Edo State police Command has taken a police officer into its custody over missing pistol in Benin.


The State Commissioner of police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo ordered the detention of the Cop on Tuesday.

It was learnt that the gun was assigned to the Cop whose identity has not been disclosed by the police and deployed him to police’ officers mess in Benin City.

The policeman, according to report later, returned to police Command and narrated how he was stripped on his gun by suspected hoodlums within the precinct.

He was thereafter handcuffed and detained in police cell.

Spokesman of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the report to our Correspondent during a telephone interview on Wednesday night.

He however did not disclose the name of the police officer who is due to appear in court on Tuesday next week after the public holiday.

According to him, “It is rather premature to comment on that. We will not want anything that can put the public into panic.

“We have taken care of that”, according to him, ” we are doing our best to ensure that the State is well policed”.

Reacting to a reported robbery incident at Oliha market on Wednesday evening in Oredo Local Government Area of the State, Nwabuzor, said, the police has not been briefed about the incident.
