Group laments ‘infiltration of criminals’ into #End SARS protests

A non-partisan group, South-South Legacy Group, has decried the alleged infiltration of criminal gangs into the peaceful #End SARS protests, appealing to Nigerian youths to remain good ambassadors of the nation.

It stressed that the Federal government concession to the 5-points agenda and demands offered a smooth sail for them to ostensibly achieve other goals until the sudden turn of events that seems to have temporarily collapsed the table of negotiations.

This was contained in a statement that was jointly signed by Mr. Osagie Aiguobasimwin and Hon. Camilus Okosun on behalf of the group on Wednesday in Benin City in response to the ongoing agitations by some Nigerians for police reform and other issues of concern, which has led to brigandage and loss of lives.

“The agenda is basically and originally five in number.
— Wants the SARS unit of the police force scraped, erring members tried, convicted and dismissed or jailed as the case may be.
— End police brutality and victimisation of Nigerian youths and other innocent Nigerians.
— Remodel the Nigerian police force to be people friendly and work for the people as proper reorientation is recommended.
— For compensation to be paid to the victims of scrapped SARS living or dead.
— Better pay packet for the officers and men of the police force’, according to the statement.

The group while demanding for the arrest and prosecution of culprits linked to the mayhem in some parts of the Country, appealed to Nigerians in diaspora and people of goodwill to rein-in on merchants of terror against fellow Countrymen and women in a bid to stop the spread of chaos in Nigeria.

It particularly condemned unwarranted invasion of some public and private institutions in some parts of Nigeria and Edo State and including the Nigerian Correctional Centre and detention as well as some Nigerian police formations in the State by suspected hoodlums on Monday.

The group commended Edo State governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for declaring a statewide curfew to check the inhuman and barbaric act of lawlessness in the State and charge him to employ him to liaise with the Nigerian military and other sister security agencies to stop the carnage and avert a state of war.

“We condemn the criminal invasion, destruction and setting ablaze of five police stations in Benin, as well as attacks on media houses like the DAAR COMMUNICATIONS’ AIT Benin Center and Vibes FM Radio station, among other institutions

It is more heart breaking and unacceptable to us as a people for anyone to turn the rein of terror against our people. We will not accept this and Edo, as well as the other South-south states’ people both at home, across Nigeria and in diaspora should stand up in unison to condemn the criminal invasion, destruction and setting ablaze of five police stations in Benin.

“We should stand up to condemn the invasion of the two Correctional facilities in Benin as well as releasing of inmates into the society. These hoodlums made away with ammunition and other firearms. You will want to ask for what intention would it be put into if not for criminality.

“If you care to know, the Monday outing has diminished the little gains of the #ENDSARS in Edo State and even in other states, as our people felt so betrayed.
