Group lauds Nigerians for averting post election violence in Edo

A pressure group, rally for peaceful election, has commended Nigerians for supporting democratic values which helped to avert post election violence in Edo State.

The Convener of the election monitoring group, Dr. Bright Oniovokukor disclosed this on while addressing newsmen on Wednesday in Benin City, Edo State Capital.

He also commended the electorate and all Stakeholders he September 19 governorship election for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner during and after the exercise.

Oniovokukor, however appealed to Contestants and political parties who are not satisfied with the outcome of the poll to seek redress in court, instead of resorting to self-help in the interest of peace.

He also commended the Benin Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II for his fatherly disposition towards peace and development of the State under governor Godwin Obaseki’s watch.

He further lauded the Candidate of the All Progresives Congress (APC), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu for putting the interest of the State above his ambition for the sake of peace.

According to him, “The second Edition of the programme was necessitated considering the pre-election that brought about palpable tension” that heralded the 2016 governorship in 2016 and 2019 general election in Nigeria.

“Our programme is aimed towards peace. Our mandate is not to judge INEC perfection or imperfections. But, various Stakeholders in Edo election collectively played their roles for peace to reign during that election.

“We saw and commanded the process. We should not magnify the errors or flaws in the election, but, we can look at the gains and build upon it.

“Why did you commend Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Candidate of APC for his peaceful disposition during and after the election?

“Since the Oba of Benin invited the actors in the election for a meeting at his palace in Benin, there has being relative peace in Edo State.

“Today is September 30th, making it exactly 11 day Edo State governorship was held. And from that day when the winner, Godwin Obaseki was declared, we have not seen any post election violence in the State.

“However, we are not stopping anybody who is aggrieved from going to court. But, from what we have seen so far, everyone of us need to be commended”, the Convener of the non-partisan group said.
