Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike and Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, have relocated to the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Edo State at Ikpoba hill in Benin to protest unexplained break in the announcement of results as it concerns Orhionmwon and Ovia South West Local Government Areas of the State.
The Chairman Edo 2020 Campaign Council, Chief Dan Orbih disclosed this in a statement on Sunday afternoon.
The statement directed “All the leaders of our great party in Benin City are hereby requested to make their way to the INEC office in Ramat Park, Benin City.
“The INEC office has taken and unexplained break in the announcement of results as it concerns Orhionmwon LGA and Ovia South West LGA.
Our Correspondent reports that barely few minutes after the Governors raised the alarm over the delay in announcing results of Orhionmwon and Ovia South West Local Government Area in PDP room on Sunday morning in Benin City, Edo State, INEC announced the results for Orhionmwon Local Government Area.
The PDP Candidate, Godwin Obaseki, scored a total of 13, 445 vote ahead of the Candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) that scored 10,458 votes, bringing the results released across the Local Government Areas of the State to 17.
Addressing journalists on Sunday afternoon, Governor Nyesom Wike who is the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council, Nyesom Wike, demanded for the release of the results and rejected inconclusive results.
He also called on the international Community to intervene in order to avoid crisis in the State, alleging that
“All the results have been collated at the Ward and Local Government levels. What is going on now is the State collation. And from what we have seen, results of 16 Local government Areas have been collated at the State level. Everybody can see some of the results. But, the returning Officer for Orhionmwon Local Government after the results of the Wards and Local Government Area have been collated, came to the State INEC and before we knew it, the returning Officer disappeared.
“Remember that I said yesterday (Saturday) that INEC should not in anyway try to declare this election inconclusive. We will not accept it because everybody knows who has won this election. It is not in doubt. So, we are calling on PDP now release the results.
“We will let the whole public know that the man (Returning Officer) who they declared missing before is in the Office of the Administrative Secretary of INEC, Benin. And they locked him in that Office. We are saying please, INEC should allow the man to come out of INEC office and present the Orhionmwon Local Government Area results as collated at the Local and Ward levels.
“We should let you know that election was held in 18 Local Government Areas in Edo State, which saw our (PDP) Candidate, Governor, Godwin Obaseki is emerging as the winner of that election.
“We want to appeal to international Community to put pressure on INEC so that they can release the results now that people have started commending them such that the commendation can complete, not half commendation.
“From what is going on now, all the efforts of people of the people will be in vain. I do not think the people of Edo State will be happy to see that.
“We do not want anything that will lead to crisis in Edo State.
On his part, Oyo State governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde, appealed to INEC to do the needful and save Edo State from avoidable crisis.
He described Edo State governorship election as an opportunity by INEC and Nigeria to redeem her battered image, adding that “the world is watching”.
According to him, “The people has indeed spoken. We do not want to put this place (Edo State) on fire. So, INEC should do the needful and the right things. The whole world is watching.
“We have an opportunity to redeem the image of this Country and INEC should not do anything to take us back”, he warned.
But, the remaining results for Ovia South West is yet to be announced by INEC as at the time of filing this report.
