Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, the First Lady of Edo State, has revealed how she met and married Governor Godwin Obaseki in the Banking sector.

Mrs. Obaseki said that she finally accepted her husband’s marriage proposal five years after he first made his intention known to her after former left defunct International Merchant Bank (IMB).

The First Lady disclosed this at the 5th Edition of Governor Godwin Obaseki Joint Coalition zoom meeting at the Weekend.

She revealed that he met Obaseki shortly after she picked joined the defunct All States Trust Bank which late fused into United Bank of Africa (UBA) which was her first job years ago.

“He (Obaseki) that seminar he met me and mustered the courage to attempt to chase me. And it me five years before I agreed to date him. The following year, I marred him”, according to her.

Mrs. Obaseki however did not disclose the year they met each other or what attracted them to each other at the meeting.

The First Lady further revealed that she was deployed to the same desk where Obaseki was redeployed from before she joined the defunct All States Trust Bank.

According to renowned Banker, whenever he (Obaseki) comes around and I am away, he normally ask after me. At a time, he took interest in me and keeps sending me to Seminars.

Reacting to a question raised by one of the participants who called in from Scotland, asking her about her feelings for not being able to have her biological children for the Governor, the First Lady, described
those making mockery of her inability to have her biological children yet with her husband as people who lack understanding, saying such people need to be pitied.

She explained further that “Children are a gift from God, so one must be patient with God and I really don’t mind what humans are saying as I know I have many children here in Edo to care for as the wife of the governor”.

“I hear some people saying all sorts of things about us but I know nobody in his right senses would make jest of people who do not have their own children, but my advice for those in my shoes is to ignore them and focus on God”.

“On the other hand, I will advise proper check-up and do other things as advised by medical experts, do all medical investigations, but you know at times everything is right with you and it’s not just coming but that is when u actually need to hope on God”.

“You could try many other ways like investigation etc, but at times they don’t work, but you must be calm, relax and leave everything to God. For me, I’m very busy here in Edo, especially with the husband being the Governor, we have more than enough children here in Edo to care about and I really pity those mocking us. They don’t understand the issues of life”.

Speaking on how much her husband place premium importance to women empowerment in Edo State, the First informed that the Governor has tremendous respect and value for the women so much so that he has over 400 of them in his government at different capacities.

She said: “My husband has absolute confidence in Edo women, he has always talked about their loyalty and trustworthiness that is why he has over 400 of them in his government at different levels and he has always praised them for putting up excellent performances in their position”.

Speaking further at the meeting via zoom Network which was attended by 300 participants including our Correspondent in Benin, Mrs. Obaseki asserted that the Governor has always approved all the proposals she has brought to him for women empowerment and opined that he is ready to do even more for the women of Edo state in his second term in office.
