The Peoples Democratic party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) has distanced their members and supporters from the mayhem that occurred around the palace of Benin monarch on Saturday.
Addressing journalists on Sunday, the PDP Chairman of Edo PDP Campaign, Chief Dan Orbih who described the incident as unfortunate, however asked the APC to take responsibility for assassination attempts on the national leadership of his party and Governors that were elected in the platform.
Orbih, charged the law enforcement agency to immediately investigate and prosecute the alleged perpetrators of the violent attack which he claimed was sponsored by APC financiers in the State.
Our Correspondent recalls that violent broke out among supporters of PDP and APC during the visit of Governor Godwin Obaseki who led other PDP Governors and the national leadership of his party to intimate the Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II of his intention to contest for the September 19, 2020 Governorship election in Edo State on Saturday at the palace of the Oba of Benin in Benin City, leaving many people injured.
Orbih argued that “The visit was officially communicated to the palace and the various security agencies in accordance with INEC guidelines.
“I also want to state that there is not official record stating that APC had any event that was scheduled for yesterday either at the palace at anywhere in the State.
According to him, yesterday’s (Saturday) incident “was organised plan to eliminate the entire leadership of PDP in Nigeria and their elected Governors if they had succeeded”.
He also alleged that “the event was capable of causing inter-state wars among the affected States their Governors were targeted to be eliminated in Edo State. This for us is a very dangerous development”.
“I want to use this opportunity to thank the leaders of PDP who restrained themselves in the face of hostilities which could have turned Saturday’s event to a war between PDP and APC.
“We appeal to our members and supporters not to take the laws into their hands. However, as a political party, we will not fold our arms and see out members been attack for any reason.
“It is now obvious that these Edo State Governorship election is now being personalised. Nobody is coming out to tell us that the Governor has not done well. But, what they are talking about is their personal issue. The internet of Edo people is greater than the personal interest of individuals”, he said.
But the Vice-Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee, APC National Campaign Council, Mr Patrick Obahiagbon, described PDP allegations as attempts by the State Government to attract undue sympathy and divert attention from the avalanche of problems that are bedevilling the State under Governor Godwin Obaseki’s watch.
He flayed the State Government intolerance of opposition party in the State and pleaded with INEC, the police and other relevant Stakeholders to prevail on the Government to allow the rule of law in all their undertaken ahead of the poll.
“Our plea this morning to INEC, the Police, and other relevant stakeholders is to request Mr. Governor to allow the rule of law and a level democratic playing field to hold supreme between now and the end of the Edo governorship election”, he said.
“Names of prominent leaders of the APC have been compiled to be dealt with, intimidated, harassed, terrorized, physically assaulted, and lacerated by state-sponsored goons”, according to him.
He also alleged plot by the State Government to probe and trump up charges against the former Governor of the State, Adams Oshiomhole before the election.
Obahuagbon stated that ” these anomalies and acts of political desperadoism, are direct affronts on the Country’s constitution and the rule of law.
