Governor Godwin Obaseki has been formally declared the Candidate of the Peoples Democratic party for the September 19, 2020 Governorship election in Edo State.
Chairman Edo State 2020 Governorship primary election/Bauchi State Governor, Mr Bala Mohammed declared him winner of the primaries that was held on Thursday at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City after polling 1952 valid votes cast in the election which recorded a total of 72 invalid votes.
A total of 2234 delegates were scheduled to participate in the election, but 2202 delegates were accredited in the election which recorded 2024 valid votes.
Three other Governorship aspirants of the party, Mr Kenneth Imasuangbon, Engr. Gideon Ikhine, and Engr. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, had stepped down for the incumbent Governor after intense and painstaking consensus arrangement before voting commenced by 6p.m on Thursday.
Addressing delegates to the primaries, Governor Bala Mohammed, described the exercise as historic, also paid tribute to the three aspirants for stepping down for Governor Obaseki.
He admitted however that the PDP had made mistakes and learnt lessons from them by entrenching internalising internal democracy.
Mohammed, described Governor Obaseki as highly resourceful and reference point in the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.
Welcoming delegates at the election, Edo State Chairman of PDP, Mr Tony Aziegbemi, described Edo State as a precursor and reference point to the success story of Nigeria.
He commended members of the party and supporters for keeping fate in PDP which has being in opposition over the years.
Aiziegbemin, urged the party faithful not to renege in their support for the party and Obaseki’s government ahead of the September 19, 2020 Governorship election in the State.
According to him, “Nigeria is a precursor to do things that are right in Nigeria…We have kept part of our bargain even without election.
“We have crossed the first hurdle. But, we need to be together”, ahead of the Governorship poll.
Aziegbemi also stated that the return of PDP to power in the State by default, was part of the promises to members of his party during his electioneering.
He commended Edo State Governor for returning the State back to opposition party.
Our Correspondent reports that Election Observers, Civil Society Organizations and Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Edo State and the Media monitored the exercise.
Voting spilled into dusk. Delegates from Edo Central, Edo north and Edo South Senatorial districts in the State, took turn to cast their ballot.
The immediate past Chairman of PDP in Edo State Chief Dan Orbih and Mrs Esther Iduehi who represented PDP board of Trustees (BoT), delivered their goodwill messages at the event which began at 4p.m with accreditation of delegates.
In his acceptance speech, Governor Godwin Obaseki, thanked Nigerians for their support so far and promised not to betray the confidence reported in him.
