No fewer than 6,590 inmates have been released by the Nigerian Government, following the recommendation of Presidential Committee for decongestion of Correctional Centres nationwide.

The Committee on prerogative of mercy that was set up by the Government few months ago in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami said this during a at an interaction with the Attorney-Generals and heads of courts across the nation on Webina.

Malami said to ensure smooth administration of Criminal Justice, a procedure has been out in place at the Correctional Centres that will make it possible for evidence of suspects in custody be taken without their physical presence in court.

He also reacted to the application of virtual court hearing is a constitutional requirement for fair hearing.
