*IGP deploys forensic experts over ‘lack of witnesses’

Tears flowed when parents of the murdered undergraduate female student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Miss Uwaila Vera Omozuwa relieved what they dread most in life to the Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Sunday afternoon.
The tragedy occurred at the RCCG, Miracle Sanctuary Mega Parish, Edo Province 10
at Ohovbe quarters, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State on Friday May 29.
Professor Patrick Igbinaduwa who led the delegation from the University to residence of the parents at Ohovbe quarters, conveyed the condolence message of the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Lilian Salami the parents of the 22-year-old female student.
The 100 Level student in the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences in the institution went to read in the church when she was allegedly raped, and fatally wounded by hoodlums before she later died the following day (Saturday) as a result of the trauma she suffered as a result of the attack at the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Benin City.
In a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the University of Benin, Dr Benedicta Ehanire on Monday, said the University on behalf of Management, Staff and students, commiserated with he family on the unfortunate death of their daughter.
The statement said that the Vice Chancellor, condemnation of the evil acts of rape and murder perpetrated against the late student who had begun to show a lot of promise in her educational pursuit.
While praying God to comfort the family, the Vice Chancellor called on “the law enforcement agents to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrator (s) to justice”.
In a bid to unravel the circumstances behind Miss Uwaila Vera Omozuwa, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, has deployed additional investigation aids and forensic support to investigate the crime.
The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), DCP Frank Mba, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
He said the deployment of the investigation aids and forensic support to the Police Command in Edo, was to complement and expedite actions in the ongoing investigations into the unfortunate incident.
Mba said it was part of deliberate and concerted efforts by the Nigeria police high command to get to the root of the brutal attack and unfortunate death of the student on May 30.
He said the IGP had condemned the attack and commiserated with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
He called for calm and pledged to bring the perpetrators of the callous act to book in the shortest possible time.
But, the Spokesman of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command DSP Chidi Nwabuzor had on Sunday decried the absence of witnesses in the investigation into the alleged murder of the student.
“As at the day of the incident, she was in a coma, so the police could not obtain a statement from her on what happened,” the police spokesperson in Edo, Chidi Nwabuzor, said yesterday (Saturday)
“It is unfortunate that no person is coming out as an eyewitness to give an account of what happened”.
He said the victim’s father, Johnson Omozuwa, who reported the incident to the police, is “a hearsay witness” because he was not at the scene of the crime. “He couldn’t tell us who the suspects are.”
Nwabuzor added that the police operatives have spoken with the people in the branch of the church where the late Omozuwa was attacked, but that all of them denied being there when the incident happened.
The police spokesperson said they cannot conclude that Omozuwa was raped by her attackers until a medical report is out from the hospital she was taken to”.
But, a police Officer has hinted that one of the suspects have been arrested by security operatives.
Similarly, a Nigerian televangelist and General Overseer, Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman has promised the sum N1 million (One Million Naira) cash reward for any person with useful information that could lead to the arrest of Omozuwa‘s murderers.
He made the pledge shortly after Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki ordered police investigation into the incident which has being greeted with condemnation.
Meanwhile, some protesters including students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), activists and concerned individuals on Monday staged a peaceful protest at Edo State police in Benin, demanding justice for Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.
The protesters who were clad in black outfits and placards decrying rape, also marched around Kings Square area of Benin City
He also denied the allegation that investigation into the crime which was alleged by a sibling of the deceased has been stalled due to lack of funding.
The Deputy Commissioner of police in charge of operations, Mr Ayoola Ajala who received the protesters, assured that investigations have commenced into the incident.
