UNIBEN in solemn tone as first PhD holder in Anatomy in Nigeria dies at 89


The University of Benin (UNIBEN) Community is in solemn tone, following the death of the first Phd holder in Anatomy in Nigeria, Professor Dorothea Baxter-Grillo.

The Jamaican born consummate researcher and iconic academic in the University of Benin, died in the early hours of Friday May, 29, 2020, at the age of 89.

This was contained in a statement that was singed by Public Relations Officer of the University of Benin, Dr Benedicta Ehanire on Saturday.

The statement titled, “sunset for a professor of professors”, said the Professor of Embryology, specialized in Paediatrics, pioneered the Department of Anatomy, University of Benin, and had held professorial positions in Jamaica, University of Ibadan (UI), Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, (OAU) University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), and University of Benin (UNIBEN) before her transition.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Lilian Salami, on behalf of Management, Staff and students of the University, in a tribute, eulogised Professor Baxter- Grillo for her panache and uncommon dedication to the well-being of humanity.

She stressed that the University don
will be greatly missed even as her family and in-laws plan her return to her home Country (Jamaica) for burial.
