Covid-19: Edo hospitals reject hand sanitisers from ex-deputy governor

The management of Central hospital and Stella Obasanjo in Benin City have turned down hand sanitisers worth millions of Naira donated by the immediate past deputy governor of Edo State, Dr Pius Odubu, amid speculations that the gesture may harm the reputation of the State government.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Tuesday, the Director General of Dr Pius Odubu Campaign Organization, Barr. Henry Idahagbon said Dr Pius Odubu, Edo State All Progressives Congress, APC Governorship aspirant was astonished when they arrived Stella Obasanjo hospital last week Wednesday and discovered that the management was not on ground to receive the hand sanitizers.

He said development prompted him to call the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Edomwonyi who apologised to him, saying, “that it is political”, we can’t receive anything from you”.

Idahagbon said members of Dr Odu’s entourage proceeded to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH in Benin City and presented the items to the management.

He alleged that the rejection of the hand sanitizers will not dampen the uncommon courage of the aspirant in showing solidarity in these trying moment when the State is plagued by the outbreak of Coronavirus.

“I called Dr Edomwonyi who gave us 11 ‘O clock appointment and when we got there, he told us that he is sorry for not been available. ‘It is political…’.

“From Stella Obasanjo hospital, we went to UBTH and present the items to them”, Idahagbon stressed.

Reacting to the development, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Patrick Okundia, denied knowledge of the incident, adding that ” It is not true.

According to him, “That is news to me. I am not aware of that. It is not to my knowledge.

“But, you need to also find out whether some people have picked them and kept them somewhere”, he said.

Relatives of patients who were admitted in some of the Wards who who were found on the sidewalk, watched with glee while the vehicle that conveyed the items drove out of the hospital premises.

Already, Dr Pius Odubu had written a letter of commendation to the management of UBTH, urging the Staff to remain in the fight against Covid-19.

Our Correspondent reports that the offer (hand sanitisers) have echoed sentiments among the political actors in the State ahead of the Governorship poll which is billed for September 2020.
