The management of University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, has hinted on plans to conduct mass burial for over 2101 ‘abandoned corpses’ in the hospital in the context of the biggest public health crisis in the Century, Covid-19 pandemic.

A document exclusively obtained by TheNewspad.com from the Public Relations unit of the hospital, indicates that the unclaimed dead bodies including accident victims have been clogging the health facility since 2017.
A breakdown of the document revealed that 1409 corpses are adults and 335 Children in 2018 record in addition to the remaining 198 adults and 159 Children for the year 2017.
Already health workers in UBTH are increasing worried about public and their own safety, following the alleged refusal by owners of the corpses to claim them after several public announcements on the mass media.

Mr Joshua Uwaila, spokesman of UBTH on behalf of the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, had announced that “failure of the owners of the dead bodies to claim them within a stipulated period, it will leave the management of the hospital with no other alternative than to dispose them off em-mass in any way the hospital deems fit”.
TheNewspad reports that the last mass burial that was conducted by the hospital, was conducted in October 2017 when over 1000 abandoned corpses were buried after alarm bells which could not be ignored in the healthcare sector rung.
