Harmattan kills 2 friends in Jos

Two young men were confirmed by the swirling harmattan wind in Jos, the Plateau State Capital.

The incident occurred midnight Friday according to elder brother to one of the deceased persons, Alhaji Labiru Idris who spoke to The Blueprint Correspondent.

The victims were residents of Gangare Community of Jos North Local Government Area of the State.

Alhaji Labiru gave his brother name as Saminu Idris 25, and his late friend as Idris also 25.

He said the deceased were age mate and intimate friends.

In the last few days, temperature in Jos, has been fluctuating between 6.7 to 9 degrees Celsius, according the National Centre for Remote Sensing on Friday.

Alhaji Labiru said: “One of them is my younger brother, we are of the same father with him, they lived and died in my house.

“Their room is outside the house, they came back Friday night at about 11:pm, and my brother knocked at my door, he collected kasco, (a local room warmer) which their light chacoal in it.”

Labiru further lamented that when he work up in the morning he smelled bad odur but was not sure from where it was.

“I looked at our kitchen thinking my wife had ploughed something and electricity was restored, which might have burnt something, I discovered that the odour was not from there.

“The window to their room is inside the house, when I was about going to open the main gate to my house, I perceived an odour, I slide the windor and smoke with odour oozed out.

“I severally shouted Saminu but he did not respond, then I called my neighbour. At this point we forced the door to their room opened but could not enter because of the intensity of the smoke.

“We later found them death. I though they were suffocated by the charcoal and probably one of them had attempted trying opening the door but on the process he pushed the warmer, which caught fire in the room,” he said.

Family members and neighbours in the area were seen commiserating with family members as the time of filing this report.
