(PHOTOS) Edo farmers record 100 per cent crop yield in maize production

Farmers in Edo State has recorded 100 per cent crop yield in maize harvest, the Nigeria Incentive-based Risk Sharing System for Agriculture Lending (NIRSAL) has said.

The Managing director of NIRSAL, Aliyu Abdulhammed made this know during the launch of Edo/NIRSAL maize production on Wednesday in Sobe in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The initiative of the Godwin Obaseki-led administration, according to Abdulhammed.

He stated that, the project has recorded 100 percent increase in yield with the cultivation of 4,400 hectares of maize by 880 farmers across the 18 Local Government Areas of the State.

“Ordinarily, we harvest 1.8 metric tons of maize per hectare but with this project we harvested four metric tons of maize per hectare.

“The collaboration we signed is to support 880 farmers to cultivate 4,400 hectares of maize. If we do that in second and third phase,

“We will harvest 17,600 metric tons of maize with a market value of N1.98 billion and the money will go into the pockets of the local farmers.

“Jobs that will be created will be more than 17,000 direct and indirect jobs,” he said.

According to him, NIRSAL is a institution created by the Central Bank Of Nigeria(CBN) and given the mandate by the CBN to enable additional financing and investment into agriculture.

“This NIRSAL and Edo collaboration has enabled free flow of finance and linkage to market and utilisation of modern technologies to improve yield.

“NIRSAL deployed the use of advance technology for the cultivation of maize and rice. We also trained the farmers in modern agronomy practice,” he added

According to him, NIRSAL enaure 75 percent insurance cover for farmers so that if there is disaster, NIRSAL will pay.

Also speaking, Governor Godwin Obaseki said, “today we are witnessing the harvest of 400 hectares of maize in Sobe.

“We are also going to sign an amendment to the ealier MOU we have with NIRSAL today to cover other programme like poultry, piggery as well as root and tuber crops,” he said.

Obaseki said that farming had become profitable under the programme adding that Agriprenuer programme was addressing the challenges confronting farmers in the state such as access to land, market and inputs.

He said the assistance from NIRSAL had made the Agriprenuer programme successful via providing all the support to reduce risk in agriculture.
