All the PDP governorship aspirants in Edo State were visibly absent at the 85th Birthday anniversary of the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion Thanksgiving service held at Saint Gabriel – The ArchAngel Catholic church in Benin City, with the exception of Engr Gideon Ikhine who defied the early morning downpour to be present at the event of the Grand Leader of the party.
Our Correspondent reports that PDP Candidate in the 2016 governorship election in the State and former Secretary to the State Government Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Mr Kenneth Imasuangbon, also known as ‘rice man’, were absent at the event.
Another PDP aspirant who did not show up, is the House of Representatives member, representing Oredo federal Constituency, Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide Ihama was also absent at the event which attracted a galaxy of guests from all works of life.
Present at the event were two former Presidents of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
The event also saw other PDP foremost leaders in the person of Chief Mike Ogiadomhe former Deputy Governor and Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan.
Visibly absent were Mike Onolememen, former Minister of Works, Mr. Iyobosa Edebiri and the State Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, no reason has been given for their absence. Their absence seems to be a silver lining for Engr. Gideon Ikhine, a front line PDP governorship aspirant to shine and make impact.
According to reports, the failure of some of the aspirants to identify with the Celebrant, the father of former governor of the State and a devoted Party Leader and one of the founding members of PDP, raised questions of loyalty from amongst party faithful in the gathering.
To demonstrate this commitment, and what true leadership represents, not only in words but in deed, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo went down memory lane while delivering his goodwill message in church at the event, when he described Chief Gabriel Igbinedion as the only surviving pillar in Edo PDP.
He identified the two other pillars, late Brig-General Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia (Rted) and Chief Tony Anenih, former Chairman of PDP Board of Trustee (BoT).
As a man who wears his heart on his sleeve, and war veteran, Chief Obasanjo’s advice, could not have come at a better time when the main opposition party (PDP) is trying to create a foothold in the State house at Dennis Osadebey Avenue and re-write the songs of lamentation occasioned by leadership failure.
The admirers of Engr. Gideon Ikhine hold the view that his commitment to a single cause which is to deliver service to the good of society has positioned him as an object of fixed familiarity, ahead of the contest for Edo State governorship election.
