A pressure group, South-South Coalition Ijaw Leadership on Friday pleaded with the Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II to pardon for attempting to usurp his power.
It also pleaded for his mercy over the fruitless darts and accusation fired at the monarchy targeted at dividing Benin kingdom under his watch by disgruntled elements.
Chairman of the Coalition, General Pere Ejune made the appeal at a Media briefing on Friday in Benin City, the Edo state Capital where he affirmed it loyalty to the Benin king.
He stated that celebrate attempts by some Ijaw overlords to distorts the facts in Benin history and reduce Oba Ewuare’s influence at Gelegele, Ovia North East Local Government Area of the State as “unfortunate”.
It would be recalled that one Pere Olodiama kingdom had coronated himself king of Olodiama kingdom in Gelegele, amidst fury and condemnation among adherents of Africa Traditional religion.
Ejune, said, “The Ijaws and Benins have never one day have any contentious issue or argument. We are brothers and sisters.
“We are pleading with the Oba to use his exalted position to forgive the brains behind the offensive publication so as to foster peace and unity in Edo State. We are loyal to the Oba of Benin”.
He described a recent by some divisive elements two Ijaw Children got missing, following alleged invasion of the Community by security personnel acting at the behest of the monarch as a hoax.
The leader of the group who showed penitence to Oba Ewuare’s sovereignty, recalled with nostalgia that the Ijaws and the Benins are one as far as Edo State were tied to the same ancestral affinity which they will forever cherish.
“We the South-South Coalition Ijaw Leadership Group are categorically condemning the publication against the Oba.
“We are also telling this group of petitioners and advising them to stop bringing false allegations with the intent to cause disaffection in the peaceful Edo riverine communities.
“We (the Benins and the Ijaws) have been together from the days of the old Western region to Midwestern region, Bendel State and now Edo State”, he said.
According to him, “The Oba is a father of everybody in Edo State. He can go to any Communities to develop the place or establish any infrastructure as he so desires”.
