A gas explosion that erupted at
magnificent Port Harcourt Mall, popularly called Spar, caused panic at Rivers State Government House on Wednesday.

The loud noise of the explosion temporary disrupted government activities and confusion at the neighourhood for about 30 minutes.

But, the assurances by police personnel who manned their vehicles in search of Improvised Explosive Device (IED), later saved the day.

Five persons who were reportedly injured from a gas explosion at the Mall which is beside Rivers Government House have been taken to hospital for medical attention.

It was gathered that the victims who are said to be in critical condition, had been taken to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), formerly.

The Health facility is Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH) in the old Government Reservation Area (GRA), Port Harcourt.

Witnesses said the explosion occurred on the first floor of the two-storey edifice, which shares fence with Brick House (Government House).

Valuable property worth billions of naira were destroyed, before the fire fighters arrived.

Efforts were made by in-house fire fighters and other staff of the mall to put out the fire, which followed the loud explosion.

The premises have been condoned off by security operatives over safety concern.

A Security personnel who preferred to be anonymous, revealed that the explosion occurred around 3:30 p.m. yesterday, without any casualty, as at the time of filing this report.

The Spokesman of Nigeria police, Rivers State Command, Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the explosion.

He admitted that five persons who were injured in explosion were receiving treatment at the State-owned hospital.

The mall, which belongs to the Rivers state government, in partnership with investors, was built when Mr. Rotimi Amaechi governed the State, but had been expanded by the current administration.

Our Correspondent reports that the massive mall at 6:30 p.m., the front and back gates were locked.

The Health facility is Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH) in the old Government Reservation Area (GRA), Port Harcourt.

An Official of the State government hinted our Correspondent that governor Nyesome Wike has ordered an investigative panel of enquiry into the incident.
