Police in Imo State have confirmed the death of six persons after inhaling generator fume.

The victims were said to left the generating set working at the lobby before going to bed after attending a wedding in Umuomumu, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the State.

23 other persons who also inhaled the fume, but, survived were taken to hospital, following the alarm raised by suspicious neighbours at dawn.

INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE, ADAMU MUHAMMED

Police spokesman in the State, Orlando Ikeokwu said, the victims were evacuated from the celebrant’s house unconscious.

According to him, “About 08.00hrs of today, one Herbert Uzoegbu reported that his brother Raymond Uzoegbu, hosted the traditional wedding of his daughter on June 9, which lasted till late in the night.

“He went to check on his brother this morning (yesterday) about 07.00hrs, only to discover that they were still indoors; he knocked but no one answered.

“He broke into the house and discovered that everyone in the house was unconscious.

He then alerted the police and a team, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Godwin Udom, arrived at the scene and evacuated the victims to the hospital, where it was discovered that six had died and about 23 were unconscious”.

He stated that the Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Ladodo, has ordered an investigation into the incident to unravel the misery behind the tragedy.

The bizarre incident has thrown the entire community in mourning mode.

Besides, the newly married Couple whose joy had been stolen as a result of the incident, have being under attack by neighbours and families of the deceased.
