Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki on Monday failed to proclaim the 7th State House of Assembly.
The setback may not be unconnected to his alleged irreconcilable differences with his successor, Adams Oshiomhole and the Governor over who controls the livers of power in 2020 Governorship poll.
Lawmakers loyal Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress had vowed to give him a run for his money and override his veto at all costs, a development which is not a surprise to observers.
The Obaseki was yet to transmit letter of authorization to the House before the exercise was postponed to Friday June 14, 2019.
His determination to create a foot hold and make his preferred stooge Hon. Frank Okiye, APC member representing Esan North East Constituency to lead the the 7the Assembly, has made matters worse.
While the Governor was being awaited to cut short his working visit to Abuja, and return to the State to carryout his Constitutional assignment, a combined team of security operatives, have blocked access to the Assembly.
Armed security personnel
were made up of Nigeria Police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), mounted roadblock at the entrance of the House of Assembly.
A combined team of security agents made up of Police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) on Monday morning mounted a blockade at the main entrance of the Assembly complex.
Addressing staff at the assembly, chairman, Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Umar Farouk, condemned the action of the Police, adding that police have no right to lock them outside their offices.
Already, 19 of the 24 Aandidates of the APC that emerged as legislators met at the weekend and elected a former impeached speaker Mr Victor Edoror, Esan West as Speaker.
Crosby Eribo (Egor) Henry Okhuarobo (Ikpoba-Okha) Roland Asoro (Orhionmwon West) Nosayaba Okunbor (Orhionmwon East) Osaro Obazee (Oredo East) Washington Osifo (Uhunmwode) Ugiagbe Dumez (Ovia North East 1) Vincent Uwadiae ( Ovia North East 11) Sunday Aghedo (Ovia South West) are among the incoming lawmakers.
Others are Speaker hopeful, Francis Okiye (Esan North East 1) Emmanuel Okoduwa (Esan North East II), Sunday Ojiezele (Esan South East) Marcus Onobun (Esan West) Ephraim Aluebhosele (Igueben) Ganiyu Audu (Estako West 1) and Aliyu Oshiomhole (Estako West II).
The rest are Emmanuel Agbaje (Akoko-Edo II) Yekini Idaiye Akoko-Edo II), Eric Okaka (Owan East) Micheal Ohio-Ezo (Owan West) Oshoma Ahmed (Estako Central) Kingsley Ugabi (Estako East Contuency.
The permutation is, if Edoror emerges Speaker, it will his umpteenth time having been impeached in the 6th assembly. When he was impeached in 2016 as Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Victor Edoror and his deputy were accused of constantly shortchanging other lawmakers.
Elizabeth Ativie, who is the first female Speaker of the assembly had then said, “the former speaker, Hon Victor Edoro, just like I said at the chamber, was very corrupt.
His highhandedness in managing his colleagues is one among equals. We were all first elected before electing him to become speaker to extent that he doesn’t come to the House as stipulated by House rules.
“The funniest thing is that he changed the overhead of the House to suit his own ways, thus ensuring that his colleagues are not properly catered for.
“You journalists can also observe that lawmakers in the Edo Assembly were now living like paupers. I don’t want to go into his reckless spending”.
But, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, signalled his principal’s intention to carry on in his post on social Media on Monday evening that the Governor will proclaim the Assembly when he returns from Abuja.
According to him, “The Governor was attending a meeting of Governors elected under the APC platform where he emerged Vice-chairman of the APC governors forum.
On the police presence at the assembly, Osagie “said the police were there because the 6th Assembly has ended and another one is yet to start, and people may take the advantage of the lacuna to commit crime.
“So people should not be surprised that the police were there. They are there to do their duty and forestall breakdown of law and order,” he said.
Curious Nigerians have predicted a turbulent 7th Assembly for the APC Governor who is battling to build a fortress around himself and weaken soft targets to pave the way for his re-election in 2020.
The Governor’s dilemma is a more serious version of the trending tales by moonlight.
