Kano governor sets 200 prisoners free during sallah

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State, has set 200 inmates free. He secured their release in the sum of over N11.5 million under the prerogative of mercy. Ganduje, who was on Sallah visit to Goron-Dutse prison, noted that the gesture brought the figures to 2,517 inmates within four years of his first tenure in office.


Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State, has set 200 inmates free.

He secured their release in the sum of over N11.5 million under the prerogative of mercy.

Ganduje, who was on Sallah visit to Goron-Dutse prison, noted that the gesture brought the figures to 2,517 inmates within four years of his first tenure in office.

He advised those released to be of good behaviour and become productive to the society, adding that, “we want you to be good citizens for the socio-economic and political development of the state and the nation in general.

“We released them judiciously based on some guidelines followed. And we are doing this to comply with directive given to governors to help in decongesting our prisons. We are doing that while following due process”.

The inability of the inmates to pay their various fines, ill-health, old age, informed the governor’s gesture.

Some got life sentences while others are to die by hanging.
