A senior advocate of Nigeria and rights activist, Femi Falana,
has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of taking dictation from the extreme by imposing the establishment of State and Local Government police on Nigeria without a constitutional framework.

He said unlike his days in the military made decree, a democratically elected government must get the approval of the National Assembly before the establishment of State and Local Government Areas police.

The senior lawyer made this remark in a terse statement in reaction to the recommendation of the Presidential panel on election reforms for police which he said was a constitutional matter.

He said the proposal for State and Local Government Areas police must go through the Parliament for amendment of the Constitution, adding that whatever decision unilaterally made by Buhari would not work.

PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI

“Issue of state police is a constitutional one; there must be an amendment of the constitution in order for the president to approve the recommendation of the National Human Rights Commission.

“The president cannot single-handedly give approval for the establishment of state police,” he said.

Peeved by the attempted infraction on the constitution, the presidency, on Monday evening denied the claim that president acted unilaterally.
