Pastor, 6 others arrested for child theft, sales

Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police has arrested one Pastor, Chinyere Okeke and six other female syndicate for allegedly involved in the theft and sales of Christabel Osaruonamen (4) and her her sibling, Amanda Osaruonamen (2).

It was gathered that the Children were stolen at Utese Community, Edo State by one  Mary Paul, in June 2018 after they were sold to one Rita Eze, in Delta state who also sold Christabel to Comfort Dike John.

Dike, runs an orphanage in Okigwe, Imo State through Joy Odey, Rita Eze and Uju Favour who are currently in remand custody in Ondo State and Benin City. 

The sustpects are, Comfort Dike John,  Glory Onuoha 38, Adendu Ifeoma 40, Evangeline Akubor 38, Pastor Chiyere Okeke 39, Ogechi 38 and Anioke Augustina 48.

Parading the suspects yeaterday the Command’s Spokesperson, Chidi Nwanbuzor, said Mary Paul was a co-tenat with the mother of the Children who entrusted  the Children in her care while going to the river.

According to him, Mary absconded with Children and sold them to one Rita Eze from Delta State at N450,000 and 300,000 fee respectively.

He explained that Rita in turn sold Amanda to a woman in Ogwas-Chukwu, Delta State at N400,00 and Christabel to  Comfort Dike John, who run orphanage in Imo state at N500,000.

Consequently, ” Comfort later sold to Christabel and passed the Children to Mrs Anioke Augustina, who adopted her,  at N8500,00 without due process.

Rita Eze, Joy Ode and Uju Favour are already in Court and remanded in Benin prison while Mary Paul who stole the kid in is Onda State prison facing a different case of Child stealing,”

“Sadly this police is yet to recover Amanda because the person who she was sold to is dead, but we are living no stone unturned in ensuring that she is recovered,” she said.

Speaking further, Nwanbuzor, said the Command also arrest one Kenneth Ofoke and Mercy Nwogha who are specialists in Child stealing and sales.

He said the suspect confessed that since they started the business, they have sold four children at N600,000.

He explained that the police recovered the Children and reunited them with their parents while the suspect and their collaborators have been charged to Court.

In an interview with journalists, Mrs Anioke Agustina, denied involment in the theft, saying she only adopted Christabel from an Orphanage run by Comfort Dike after paying the s of N850,000.

Augustina who had been married for 18 years with two kids, said she decided to adopt a child because her kids are all schools and needed baby to be play with at home.

“I agreed to adopt the baby when I saw government approved written on the sign board”.

On her part, Comfort Dike,  said she bought the baby at N500,000, when the woman who brought her said   the baby’s father was in the  mortary and that she would not be able to take care of her.

“I did not know that the baby was stolen. But I only collect N700,000 from the woman who adopted  her and not N850,000,” she said.

Also speaking, pastor Chinyere Okeke, said she was not aware that the baby was stolen because they were given papers to make it genue.

“I only took the buyer to the orphanage. I did not know that the baby was stolen. It is painful because of the embarrassment.,” She said
