A former Nigeria Head of States, General Yakubu Gown (Rted) has paid tribute to widow of Civil war veteran, Mrs. Clara Ogbemudia for keeping faith in the Nigerian project.

He spoke at the 46th Founders’ Day of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) launching/Endowment fund in Benin City, Edo State.

Gowon, conveyed his greeting to the widow of Brig-General Samuel Ogbemudia (Rted), former governor of the defunct Mid-west and Bendel State.

Recalling with nostalgia how Ogbemudia as a military governor of the defunct Mid-West region liberated the defunct Bendel State from BIAFRA during the Nigerian Civil war which began 1967 when he was Head of States.

The emotional ladened Gowon in a remark, said, “Samuel Ogbemudia (Junior) looks very much like your father. I am happy to see you today. Please convey my greetings to your mother.

Our Correspondent reports that Ogbemudia was a committed Nigerian army officer and military Governor (1967–1975) of the Mid-West State, later renamed Bendel State, part of which in turn became Edo and Delta States.

Ogbemudia passed in March 2017 at the age of 84, leaving behind his widow and Children including his eldest son, Mr. Samuel Ogbemudia (Junior) who was among the dignitaries present at the Ceremony.

In a brief remark on the occasion, Samuel Ogbemudia (Junior), urged Nigerians to keep his father’s legacy.

He charged Nigerian leaders not to be power drunk, but see their elevation as a call to service, adding that leaders should be loyal to their benefactors irrespective of their social status or of affluence in society.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire whose goodwill message was read on the occasion by Mr. Belgore Shaibu, promised that the federal will continue to prioritise adequate funding of health facilities.

He eulogised the former Head of States, General Yakubu Gowon (retd) under whose purview the foundation stone of UBTH which had been upgraded since it was established 46 years ago.

He described endowment fund in health institutions, was a “master stroke that is required for efficient and effective service delivery in Nigeria.

He said UBTH under the watch of Prof. Darlington Obaseki, has made a remarkable progress as a referral center and sued for its sustenance.

He called for “better optimization of of resources and asset, quality and promptness of service and above all, a promise of a more compassionate and respectful attitude towards patients and to each other”.

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Benin, Prof. Faraday Orumwense whose address was delivered by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ekehuan Campus, Prof. J. O. Abolagba, said UBTH has lived up to his mandate over the years.

He however challenge its management to soar higher in service delivery and urged philanthropic individuals and organizations to donate generously towards the endowment fund of UBTH.

A former governor of Edo State and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, lauded UBTH for its customer friendly policy.

He promised to liaise with concern authorities to enable the hospital bridge deficit in infrastructure of over $6 million dollars.

He said quack doctor contributed largely to his late wife, Mrs. Clara Oshiomhole’s death years ago.

According to him, “my late wife was being treated for something else while cancer was growing in her breast”

Edo State Commission for Health, Dr. David Osifo, Athe State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, former military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rted), the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, Oba of Benin palace functionaries and a host of dignitaries graced the occasion.
