The Nigerian Red Cross Society has drawn the attention of leaders and latent global organisations to the pertinent need to embark on rapid response to disaster emergencies and funding of humanitarian operations.

The Chairman of the Red Cross in Anambra state, Nigeria, Peter Emeka Katchy, made the call in his address on the occasion to mark the 2019 World Red Cross Day in Awka, the Anambra State Capital.

Katchy, a gold medallist, while speaking on the theme of the 2019 World Red Cross Day, “Love for Humanity,” said  rapid response to disaster emergencies and funding of humanitarian operations are very imperative to creating enabling environment in order to achieve global security and safety, which he said, is central to world economic and social order.

“This year, the International Committee of Red Cross and Red Crescent and the International Federation of Red Cross are strategically appraising and evaluating the vantage roles of humanitarian love and the need for greater emphasis on volunteers’ joint efforts as the major executors for service to humanity.

“Every emanating disaster situation, preparedness for disaster, prevention of disaster, mitigation and rapid response to emergency situations are all anchored and piloted by volunteers… Therefore, the Red Cross is focussing and highlighting on concerted efforts of humanitarians all over the world.

“This is basically to draw the attention of leaders and latent organisations on the pertinent need to embark on rapid response to disaster emergencies and funding of humanitarian operations,” he said.

While commending the Grand Patron and Mother- General of the Red Cross, Anambra state, Governor Willie Obiano and wife, Ebelechukwu, respectively, for their humanitarian dispositions towards residents of Anambra state, and in fighting for the welfare of the downtrodden, Katchy solicited for their continued assistance and support, and that of other humanitarian organisations to enable the Red Cross Society in the state to respond very vigorously and actively towards emergency situations.

Earlier, former Chairman of Red Cross, South-East Zone, Honourable Justice Paul Obidigwe (rtd), who was present at the occasion, noted that the major aim and objective of the Red Cross is to assist vulnerable people through swift response to emergencies.
