Sporadic gunshots greeted the violent procession by some armed groups suspected to be Cultists on Tuesday night in Benin City.
The incident which occurred at about 7pm on Tuesday night at Upper Sokponba juncture and by Murtala Muhammed (MM) way in the State Capital, left at least two persons feared killed while scores got injured.
Roads leading to the densely populated Upper Sokponba road axis which has become a den of Cultists and MM way, were convulsed in a traffic snarl for several hours.
It was gathered that the sporadic gunshots by the hoodlums, set pedestrians and commuters in a panicky mood while business owners around the Area abandoned their shops over fear of attack.
NEWSPAD reports that the hoodlums had stepped into a nearby shop and took spirits which they mushed along with substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, also known as Indian hemp, before going berserk.
It was gathered that the suspected Cultists fled before security operatives arrived the scene
Some Facebook and other social Media platforms erupted with appeals to security operatives to step in while others advised their loved ones to road users to be avoid the area temporarily.
A Commercial bus driver who shuttle the King square enroute MM way to Upper Sokponmba, described the scene like a Hollywood movie.
The driver who declined to mention his name, said, “We were shocked when some small boys with guns came out from no where and started shooting”.
“Passengers who boarded my vehicle began to jump out. Some of them got injured in the process.
“Before we know what
was happening, everybody started running. My friend gun is weapon that deserve to be dreaded.
“Policemen later came and made some arrest. One of the boys arrested was just an onlooker. But before that time, the main people had run away”, he said.
Police authorities in Edo State have hinted on plans to give a comprehensive report in the ongoing investigation in connection with the incident.
A Non-Novernmental Organization on the platform of Legends Anti-Violence Foundation, had in April 2019, put the casualty figure of cult related killings in Edo State at 200.
The Director General of Comrade, Kadiri Christopher of the organization further said that thousands of persons have on the edge of the calamity, while hundreds of breadwinners have fled their homes over fear of vengeful attacks.
Already, Security operatives have declared manhunt on the hoodlums on order of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Danmallam Mohammed.
Recall that Edo State Police Command last Thursday inaugurated a special force code-named operation ‘operation puff adder’ to fight criminality.
Apart from complementing the effort of the State Security outfit, tagged “Wabaizigan” abolish activities of bad boys” Operation puff adda.
The security outfit, was expected to bring sighs of relief to residents of the State.
According to the Commissioner of Police, the outfit is ‘based on the principles of Community policing and intelligence without any conflicting roles.
He explained that the inauguration is in compliance with the directives of Inspector General of Police aimed at checkmating criminals and their sponsors.
