No fewer than 200 youths have enounced their membership  of cult groups in Ondo town, Ondo State.

The age range of most of the youths are between 16 and 25 years old, and mostly students and apprentices.

They renounced their membership in the presence of members of the Osemawe in-Council, chiefs, spiritual leaders, members of the Ondo Ekimogun and youths associations in the town at the Weekend.

It was gathered that they belonged to various cult groups; including the Eiye confraternity, Black Axe, Aye, Vikings and Scorpion. Activities of the cultists have ruptured the peace in the town for a long time resulting in the death of people.

The traditional ruler of the town, the Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo had expressed concern over the incessant attacks and clash of cult groups in the town.

At a Ceremony held at his palace,  Oba Kiladejo warned that: “Any individual or group found to engage in cult activities, thereafter, at the detriment of the peace of the kingdom will be handed over to the law enforcement agents.

“The killings and disruption of the existing peace in the land is being threatened by the activities of the cultists. “Ondo people are known for their honesty, hard work, integrity, education and contribution towards the development of the kingdom and not killings and disruption of the peace in the land by cultist groups, in their show of supremacy”.

Reacting, a leader of the group, Ijilade said they joined the group because they were unemployed and assured the Osemawe in council that  they would not return to their former ways again. Ijilade apologised “for disrupting the peace of the land. We will not abuse the opportunity offered us by our father, the Osemawe of Ondo.”
