Robbers invade Ondo, kill church bursar

Akure —UNKNOWN gunmen, yesterday, invaded the Akure Diocesan office of Anglican Communion in Ondo State, killing the Bursar, Gabriel Abiodun, and carted away N500,000.
The Bishop of the diocese, Rt Rev Simeon Borokini, was said to have left the office less than an hour after the robbers struck.
Almost simultaneously, another set of armed robbers reportedly snatched N500,000 from the pay master of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Abiodun, at gun point as he alighted from his vehicle in the premises of the ministry.
Top officials of the ministry and other staff watched helplessly as the three armed robbers disposed the paymaster of the money within the premises and fled unmolested.
Meanwhile, the Diocesan office that was attack is located at Alagbaka area of Akure metropolis.
The 58-year-old church bursar and father of four was said to have been trailed from a new generation bank where he had gone to cash money for church expenses.
He was shot on both legs by the bandits and gave up the ghost before he got to the hospital. Reports had it that he lost so much blood that led to his death.
Vanguard gathered that the deceased, after returning from the bank, was swooped on by three gunmen, who arrived the office in a 2002 model Toyota Corolla car, and requested the money he went to withdraw from the bank.
His refusal to hand over the money to the bandits, according to a church source, made one of them to shoot him at close range.
The bandits ended up collecting the money after he was shot and fled the diocesan office.
Police detectives invited by the church leaders removed his corpse and deposited same at the state specialist hospital in Akure metropolis.
Sympathisers have continued to throng the office and the residence of the deceased bursar, whose wife works with the Federal Medical Centre in Owo.
