Agency laments involvement of Children in drug abuse, trafficking

But, the authorities concerned had bristled away similar observations in the past.

The Edo State Commander of the agency, Mr. Buba Wakawa, augmented the growing drug markets in Nigeria and cautioned parents to keep their Children in check from drug-related crime scorching School Children.

Presenting the first quarter report of the Command, Wakawa said 72 suspected drug traffickers were arrested while a total of 6,645kg of ilicit drugs had been seized by the organization.

He revealed that the age of the 16 of those arrested by security operatives in the Command were between 15 to 24 years.

A breakdown of the report indicates that 72 suspected traffickers were arrested with 6,645kg of drugs in the first quarter – between January and March 2019.

Those apprehended include forty-Eight (48) male representing 66.7percent and Twenty-Four (24) female representing 33.3 percent.

The seized drugs include 6,644.57kg of cannabis, 401 tablets of Tramadol, 645 tablets of Rophynol, 24 grammes of cocaine, 534 grammes of Amphetamine and 30 bottles of codeine syrup.

The Command also identified and destroyed 2.543732 hectares of cannabis farms.

Some of the farms were located in Usen and Ugbogui in Ovia South West Local Government Area and Uromi in Esan South West Local Government Area.

Vehicles impounded include one Toyota Sienna ash colour marked, Ondo AKR 384 AL and ash colour Nissan Sunny car with registration number Lagos LND 898 BL.

Further breakdown of monthly arrests and seizures were also given by the Command.

In January 2019, 26 arrests were made by the organization while 1,035.11kg of drugs were seized.

Besides, 33 arrests were made in February 2019 with 584.75kg of drugs while 13 arrests with 5,025.27kg of drugs were seized in March 2019.

Twenty-Eight (28) suspects fall within 25 to 34 years, while the sixteen (16) suspects fall within 15 to 24 years and 34 to 44 years respectively.

Six (6) suspects fall within 45 to 54 years category.

Edo State indigenes are the highest among the suspects with a total of thirty (30), Delta is next with twenty-six (26) while three (3) each are from Benue and Ondo, Katsina and Anambra States had two (2) each.

Simikqrly, Ekiti, Plateau, Abia, Cross River, Ebonyi and Kogi States had one suspect each. 

Two drug dealers and counselled eighty (80) others with drug abuse problem were convicted during the period.
