Polls: Edo relaxes enforcement of traffic rules, others

Edo State government has relaxed the enforcement of road traffic rules in Edo State.  The prohibition of trading at authorized locations in the State are also not left out ahead of Saturday Presidential and national Assembly elections. Checks conducted at the various locations, indicate a disorderly conduct by traders and commuters especially across the Metropolitan

The prohibition of trading at authorized locations in the State are also not left out ahead of Saturday Presidential and national Assembly elections.

Checks conducted at the various locations, indicate a disorderly conduct by traders and commuters especially across the Metropolitan Council Areas of the State.

Major markets in Oredo, Egor and Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Areas are now driven by addictions of various sorts, which have set concern Citizens on edge.  

They harbour potential epidemic; Just as Consultants in charge of waste management now have lots of refuse to contend with due to improper waste disposal and management.

Corrupt traffic officials deployed to control traffic and enforcers of ban on Street have catch-in on the situation to extorts Nigerians or compromise.

The State government has neither denied the allegation nor announce the reversal on the ban on Street trading or enforcement of order in the State. 

But the move has been widely criticised.

2019 Candidate of Action Democratic Candidate (ADC) for Oredo West Constituency in  State house of Assembly, Mr. Kola Edokpayi, sued for the need to strengthen institution to curb the menace of street trading in the State.    

Unlike in the past when offenders were arrested and sent to prisons, “we expect strict compliance on traffic laws in order not to paint a picture of deception.

“At the King Square yesterday, we saw Commercial bus drivers driving against traffic.

“Traders now display their wares on walk way conspicuously”, he said.  

The illumination of the Street lights powered by a generating set at the popular King Square Local Government Area and some major Streets in Oredo and other environs.

But, it has helped to ward-off criminal elements while in another breadth, the Street lights have provided a safe haven for Street trading particularly at night.

In addition, the season of the moment, has also returned happiness to commuters who take delight in picking passengers anywhere, thereby causing gridlock to other road users.

Recall that Edo State under the watch of Governor Godwin Obaseki, had sent violators of traffic rules and street trading to jail with options of fine, ranging from N10, 000 to N50, 000 with or without option of fine in the past.
