Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator, Matthew Urhoghide, has asked the leadership of the party to consider available options for worthy successors of late Chief Tony Anenih, Brig-General Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia and Chief Gabriel Igbinedion who will be 85 years old in September 2019.

The federal lawmaker, representing Edo South Senatorial district, Edo State, said Chief Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, is no longer physically fit to go for electoral battle due to his age.

The illustrious Edo State sons, apart from ranking among the founding members of the party in 1998, had career in politics.

Anenih otherwise known as “Mr. fix it”, was a former national chairman of PDP and a former minister of works. He passed on at the age of 82 in November 2018.

Ogbemudia died in 2017. He was renowned for his legacies as governor of Midwestern region and the defunct Bendel State now Edo and Delta States.

Urhoghide however, said the wise counsel of the leaders and their selfless contributions in PDP had offered a sense of direction and leadership to the party.

He sued for the need for a strong coalition to overcome what he termed” intolerable posture of opposition by the ruling party” at both the federal and State levels.

Senator Urhoghide, chairman Senate Committee on Public accounts, said this when he paid a working visit to Edo State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

He challenged members of his party and supporters to groom credible persons that would take up the mantle of leadership when the present set of leaders have completed their tenure.

“The original owners of PDP are no more. Anenih, Ogbemudia did well during their time. We have to begin to think on how to take over leadership. Dan Orbih (Edo State PDP Chairman) tenure will soon expire. Don’t expect Igbinedion to go to the field for you.

“He (Igbinedion) is no longer strong. We have to give proper direction to the party and raise young leaders.

“By the last demographic survey, we (Edo State) population were 3.2 million people”, he said.

The Senator who was accompanied by his wife Mrs. Obiageli Urhoghide, appealed to media practitioners to be objective in their reportage and remain apolitical, no matter whose ox is gored.
